PURITY

“This branch of my work focuses on the microcosm of the macro-problem. By deconstructing purity culture, we are deconstructing the faith of our nation to expose the trauma of colonial western expansionism. Confronting our sexual wounds and religious trauma leads to Revival.”

PURITY CULTURE refers to a faith-based abstinence-only sex education movement that uses purity rings, commitment cards, and purity balls to encourage young women to abstain from sex until marriage. Though well-meaning, the phenomenon peaked from the mid-90’s to the early 2000’s penetrating mainstream culture and inadvertently traumatizing the marriages of 25 million Americans today.
